1 Varnhagen published extracts from Rahel’s letters to her in the Buch des Andenkens, frequently disguising them as diary entries or employing the code Frau v. F. Ludmilla Assing, in the correspondence she published between Rahel and Varnhagen, always calls her Regina Frohberg, although this name never occurs in the original letters of Rahel; Rahel usually referred to her as “the Friedländer.”
